Search Engine Optimization (SEO) may be boring but it is better. Trust me. I have been blogging for 4 years and I have found that failure to optimize my blog posts for search engines is a sure way to front row seats to the performance of the crickets as they sing sweetly. Nobody will read these posts except the occasional individual who clicks simply because your post shows up in their social media feeds. No other reason.
This morning I received yet another email congratulating me on acquiring a new customer. That was music to my ears especially because of the way I acquired that new customer. I did absolutely nothing to gain this new customer except for writing and publishing a few SEO optimized blog posts over a year ago. I have not written and published any new blog posts on that particular blog in one whole year. Yet, I continue to earn from the few posts that I took the time to ensure were optimized for search engines. I made an amazing discovery. Sometimes boring is better. Absolutely boring but absolutely better.
SEO Is Essential For Targeted Web Traffic
I am convinced now more than ever that the best writers and those who have a way with words are not necessarily those who will be able to attract the most readers. And some of these very talented people will become frustrated when they find that far less talented writers than themselves are making good money through blogging while they struggle to get readers.
As a freelance writer, I often get requests to write articles for clients. Today I got a request from a client who wanted me to rewrite an article and make it sound original. And he wanted me to maintain the original writing style. But there was an issue…a huge issue that he failed to recognize. While the original article was well-written, creative and engaging, it was not SEO optimized in the least bit. The headline contained none of the keywords, and neither did the first paragraph until the very last line. And while it was a very good read, I could tell immediately that the writer knew very little about how to write for the web. If I were to meet his request, I would be doing him a great injustice. Because I knew that if I wrote the article the way he wanted it written, that his target audience was unlikely to read it. Why? Because there was no indication from the headline or from the excerpt, that the article would benefit them in any way.
The Truth About Good Web Copy
It’s not about creativity anymore. It’s about getting your pieces in front of those who are interested in what you have to say. It’s not about having your way with words because when it comes to writing web copy, having your way with words is just not good enough. You may be able to earn an “a” for your creativity and for the way you say the simplest things, but if you don’t have an audience, you don’t stand a chance. Not a chance.
What am I saying? I am saying to all my fellow bloggers and freelance writers out there who are tearing out their hair trying to figure out what they are doing wrong that sometimes boring is better. Yes, it may be absolutely boring to try to fit those keywords in every single headline. And it may be boring trying to use those keywords a number of times throughout the piece without sounding stiff and artificial. And it may be boring to not have the freedom to just express your thoughts without worrying about the stupid search engines. But the reality is that if you want your efforts to pay off, you must take the time to learn about search engine optimization and to apply the principles to every article that you publish. Otherwise, you will be fighting a losing battle.
Let’s be smart about writing copy for the web then folks. Let’s work smarter and not harder. Let us write so that the search engines will pick up our pieces the minute we hit the publish button. Folks may tell you to write for people and not to write for the search engines but guess what? Those people who you are writing for will never get the privilege of reading your work because they won’t be able to find your pieces easily among the myriad of other information that comes at them on a daily basis.
So you have a decision to make now. Be boring and profit and be creative and lose. The choice is simple. SEO optimization is the better way!
